Memorial Awards

Jacqueline Gage Sarles Memorial Award

Established in 1968

The Jacqueline Gage Sarles Memorial Fund is a major contributor to the Community Scholarship Fund of Barrington.  Long-time Barrington residents, Jacqueline and Harvey raised two sons who attended Barrington High School; Jay (BHS Class of 1963) and Harlow (BHS Class of 1966). Jacqueline was very active in the community and committed to providing educational opportunities for all students.

Ella V. Quilty Endowment for Scholarship

Established in 1980

Miss Ella Quilty was a teacher at the Leander R. Peck High School, later becoming became assistant principal at BHS. She established the scholarship upon her retirement, requesting two scholarships be awarded annually, one to a male student from Barrington and one to a female Barrington student.

David Evans Lansinger Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1981

David (BHS Class of 1981) died in an automobile accident on the night of his graduation. An outstanding student and a member of the cross-country and track teams at BHS, David had planned to attend Amherst.

Suzanne Lynne Reynhout Memorial Award

Established in 1983

Suzanne (BHS Class of 1979) died while a student at Carnegie Mellon. She was interested in art and architecture. Her father, David, was an active member and a past president of the Community Scholarship Fund.

Lt. Jeffrey R. Scharver USMC Award

Established in 1984

Jeffrey (BHS Class of 1976) was a Marine Corps helicopter pilot killed in the invasion of Granada.

Ann Cuthbertson Memorial Award

Established in 1987

Anne was an active member of the Community Scholarship Fund Board for many years. This award was established in 1985 at the time of Ann’s death and permanently funded in 1987.

The Jean Buffum Memorial Fund

Established in 1989

Jean, a retired teacher, was a member of the Community Scholarship Fund Board for many years and a past president. Her husband, Tim also served on the Board and established the Memorial Fund.

Patrick Cannon Memorial Award

Established in 1989

Patrick (BHS Class of 1987) died in an automobile accident. Patrick was an outstanding hockey player and each year a BHS alumni hockey game played in his memory funds this scholarship. In recent years the hockey game also has raised funds for the Lt. Jeffrey Scharver and John Hall scholarships.

Charles E. Feeley Award

Established in 1989

Charles (BHS Class of 1969) passed away from leukemia in 1989. Charles was very active in debate and theater arts while at BHS and his family and friends established this scholarship to benefit students involved in these activities.

The Snyder Family Memorial

Established in 1995

Established by Community Scholarship Fund Board member, Mary Anne Snyder and her daughter Barbara, in memory of her husband Harry and son Stephen (BHS Class of 1972).

Robert F. Reid Memorial Scholarship Award

Established in 1996

Bob served as principal of Primrose Hill School from 1954 until he retired in 1976.  He joined the Board of the Community Scholarship Fund after his retirement as a way to stay active in education. His wife, Bette, endowed a scholarship in his name to carry on his legacy. His daughter, Carolyn Materne, is a past president of the Community Scholarship Fund.

Dorothy M. and Victor Teixeira Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1996

Dorothy’s husband, Vic, a well-known Barrington resident, established the award in Dorothy’s memory. The award represents Mrs. Teixeira’s strong interest in helping students further their education.

The Cashill Family Scholarship

Established in 1997

Alice Cashill and her daughter Kayce, established this scholarship in memory of her husband Tom and son Chris who died within six months of each other. Tom was a well-known political consultant active on the Republican State Committee. Chris loved golf and fishing.

The Bill Sexton Memorial Scholarship Award

Established in 1998

Bill (BHS Class of 1969) was an outstanding athlete both at BHS and Bowdoin College. He died of cancer in 1995.  His high school classmates established this scholarship in his memory and hold a golf tournament annually to benefit the scholarship and Bill’s children.

The James K. McMillan & Myrtle R. McMillan Memorial Endowment for Scholarships

Established in 1998

Long-time Barrington residents, James and Myrtle had no children of their own but were considered “grandparents” to many of the Roberta Park neighborhood children. They established this scholarship with a generous bequest to the Community Scholarship Fund to help Barrington students further their education.

S. Martin Billet Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1999

Established by his wife and children to honor his very active involvement in our community over many years, especially with regard to education.  Active in the Boy Scouts, he served as Troop 1 Scoutmaster. He was also a member of the BHS renovation committee.

Daniel Cole Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2000

Dan (BHS Class of 2000) died in an automobile accident in the fall of 1999. The annual road race, “On Eagles’ Wings Dan Cole Memorial 5K Road Race” supports this award.

John Hall Memorial Scholarship Award

Established in 2001

Established by John’s family at the time of his death. John graduated from Hebron Academy in Maine where he was a member of the hockey team. Additional funds are received from the annual alumni hockey game.

Grady Family Endowment for Scholarship

Established in 2001

A BHS graduate, Ellie received one of the first Community Scholarship Fund scholarships in 1959. In  2001 Ellie and Ray Grady (both BHS Class of 1959) generously endowed a permanent scholarship. Ellie also serves on the Board of the Community Scholarship Fund.

John Ruggieri Memorial Scholarship Award

Established in 2003

John was very active in the Barrington community, serving on the Town Council, in Rotary and as a past president of the Community Scholarship Fund. John passed away in November 2002 and his family and friends established the scholarship.

 Ian D. & Kathryn I. Malcolm Memorial Endowment

Established in 2004

Mr. Malcolm served as the Superintendent of Barrington schools for many years. The scholarship is intended to benefit an applicant with an interest in education, performing arts, or sports.

Albert D. Genetti Endowment

Established in 2006

Albert D. Genetti served as principal of BHS from 1963 – 1980. Al and his family established the scholarship to help fund the college expenses of a BHS graduate who demonstrated “an increasing commitment to academic and leadership achievement as they progressed through their high school years.”

H. Bickford & Nancy B. Lang Endowment

Established in 2007

H. Bickford and Nancy moved to Barrington in 1953 and Dr. Lang practiced pediatrics until his retirement in 1994. Mrs. Lang died in 2004 and Dr. Lang died in 2009.

George F. and Martha McLean Creamer Endowment for Scholarship

Established in 2012

This scholarship gives preference to students pursuing vocational or technology school training.

Richard F. Paolino Memorial Scholarship 

Established in 2012

A member of the Community Scholarship Fund Board, Rich passed away in 2011. His family and friends endowed this scholarship with preference to a student who is a scholar and athlete.

Chris Boone Scholarship

Established in 2014

Chris’ family and friends created and funded the scholarship in memory of the 1984 graduate of BHS. Chris was known for his quick wit, pithy expressions, and ability to make people laugh. At the time of his death, Chris was Director of the Middle School at Bancroft School in Worcester, MA.

Thomas J. and Roberta C. Coyne Endowment for Collegiate Scholarship

Established in 2013

Established in 2013 by the sons of Tom and Bobbie Coyne this award recognizes academic and extra curricular leadership and achievement both in and out of the classroom. Long time Barrington residents, Tom and Bobbie were active in many community activitiesas they raised their three sons in town. Bobbie was a former CSF board member.

The Robert & Nancy Smith Memorial Award

This award was established with the support of family and friends to honor the memory of Robert and Nancy Smith and recognize their commitment to education. Members of the Barrington community since 1958, Robert and Nancy raised a family of seven, generously providing each a college education. A past president of CSF, Bob enthusiastically dedicated years of service helping others further their education.

Nancy W. Jencks Founders Scholarship

Nancy Jencks was one of the founders of the Barrington Community Scholarship Fund, originally known as the Barrington Citizens Scholarship Fund, more than 50 years ago. Nancy was an accomplished, independent woman who gave generously of her time as a member of the Barrington Congregational Church, the Barrington District Nurse Association, and Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island.  This scholarship honors Nancy’s legacy.

Scott H. Andrews Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2020

Scott (BHS Class of 1985) played football, hockey and rugby. He continued playing hockey and rugby at college and as an adult; Scott played men’s league hockey until his passing in 2018.  He was a driving force behind the annual BHS alumni hockey game.  Scott was a staunch supporter of Barrington athletics and his family established this scholarship in his memory to help student athletes further their education.

Peter D Wilk Memorial Award

Established in 2024

Peter D Wilk was a 1983 BHS graduate who went on to play baseball at Rollins College.  His love of history and his career as a baseball coach brought him to many locations around the world, but he always referred to Barrington as “home.”  Pete was an assistant at Harvard University and head coach at Georgetown University for decades. He was known and respected on diamonds from Vermont to the Dominican Republic not only for his baseball knowledge and success, but also his gift of making personal connections and friendships that lasted his lifetime.  Pete passed away in April, 2024 from glioblastoma.
